I am a Millennial

I part my hair on whatever side it falls at the time. That never includes the middle and hasn’t for a very long time. I wear wide-leg jeans, skinny jeans, straight-leg jeans, and mostly, I wear dresses. I don’t let the shape of my pants (or my skirt) dictate the content of my character. I freely use the laughing-so-hard-I’m-crying emoji as it accurately mimics how I feel when I use it. I hate Tiktok. But not because I’m too old to use it. I hate it because my introverted heart finds it noisy and overwhelming. I listen to music on any and every medium I can. Vinyl is nice, but it’s not convenient. Give me music live, on vinyl, on a CD, downloaded onto my computer, or through Spotify. I don’t judge. I just don’t want to mess with a cassette tape. Been there, done that, and who has time for rewinding?

I remember when you only had to punch in 7 digits to call your friend, when AIM was a cool new way to talk to your friends after school, when you had to call someone, hoping they weren’t eating dinner with their family and actually leave a message. I also remember recording television via VHS tapes and having to make sure you scheduled it for the correct time, watch it before your ran out of storage on your tape, and then rewind to record over the previous week’s episode. And that was in high school, my friends. I didn’t have a cell phone until I was 14, and it was for emergencies only. I didn’t actually text my friends until the end of my college days.

I am proud to be “obsolete” in the eyes of the younger generation. It means I no longer have to pretend like I’m trying to keep up with trends. I’ve been waiting to be in my 30s since I turned 20. I’m not old, I’m not in my “golden years”. I’m right where I want to be, living the life I want to live, wearing the pajama pants I love. And nobody, not one person can tell me that I’m not cool anymore. Because I think it’s pretty cool to be me. (and you should think this about yourself too.)
