Today I took a model out to a local park I frequent with my kids. She’s new, and I am transitioning, and so it was the perfect fit.
And what I realized from our time together is that not all shoots have to be planned out, epic editorials, or perfectly shot family sessions. Sometimes you just need to get out in a field with some wardrobe items pieced together by you and your model and photograph the same pose from every different angle you can think of. Sometimes a shoot needs to be an experiment.
Sometimes, you need to think about your shoot like a research project, taking all the different shots, taking the same shot over and over from different heights with different light settings, maybe having your model turning her head ever so slightly.
That’s what I did today, and it was amazing. It felt like writing these blog posts, practicing for the sake of practicing.
