The words we say to people matter. The way we put our words together matters. Whether we mean it or not, the words and the syntax can have a negative or positive effect on the person we are talking to or about, the people who view our words on social media.
My mom always used to say, “think before you speak”. And it’s so true. I don’t think I quite understood exactly why she said that when I was a little girl. But now that I’ve had a chance to make the mistakes of using the words the wrong way, using the wrong phrases, and using a tone that doesn’t exactly scream love, I’ve begun to understand how those words and the tone can stick with someone forever.
When we stop and think about the way we want to talk to someone, rather than being reactive and spitting out words that we may regret later, we can have a more honest conversation, and we can keep the conversation going. We earn trust. By using words that are objective, positive, constructive, we can make an impact in our relationships, businesses, and activism.
